Bathroom Tile Options

On a recent tile showroom visit selecting bathroom tile for a couple of projects, we came across some interesting options. There is some GORGEOUS tile out there (and some questionable manufacturing decisions too!).

Patterned tiles

We’ve become accustomed to seeing the patterned encaustic tiles that have been so popular again in recent years - they are a centuries old type of tile , but are having a revival at the moment. Some are reminiscent of quilt patterns, some are simpler dramatic geometrics, Many patterns are available at a variety of qualities and prices. They’ve arrived at the big box stores, which means they are either destined to be an enduring classic in the manner of white subway tile, or are on their way out as a trend. Time will tell. Either way they make a striking statement.

At one of our favorite showrooms, we saw these porcelain tiles that would make a great feature wall in a bathroom or a lovely kitchen backsplash! Porcelain is technically a subdivision of ceramic tile - chiefly designated by its exceptionally low water absorption rate. It is, in general, denser and harder than it’s ceramic cousins, has through-body coloring and is very resistant to cracking or staining. But all that aside - these are just as pretty as they are hard-working!

This geometric in an Esheresque optical illusion block pattern was fascinating, but might be a bit disconcerting as a floor material!

Larger format tiles limit grout lines - these 12” x 24” mosaic patterned marble look porcelain tiles are a great solution if you want a lot of pattern without a lot of grout!

Field Tiles

Sometimes we refer to the supporting cast members of the tile in a room as the field tiles - these would be the plain or more subdued patterned tiles

For a shower floor, smaller tiles are desirable to conform to the floor pitch to the drain and to increase grout lines and thus traction.

These 2” tiles are a great shower floor option. And we found the perfect grout color to blend as well!

Unusual tile

Unusual being code for OMG I can’t believe someone MADE this?!

And then there is this…in two color options, no less…for those who want the look of perpetual mold and mildew in their bathroom? On the plus side, cleaning would be pointless…

This next level "distressed" (or is it distressing?) tile comes in both black mold and yellow mold.versions. Lovely.

PLEASE REMEMBER, Tile lasts a looooong time and is very cumbersome and expensive to change. Choose wisely - the product will outlast the trends, and exaggerated colors and shapes will go in and out of fashion. Classic colors and patterns will have timeless appeal and keep your bathroom from looking dated in 10 years.
