One Room Challenge, Week 3

Wow! Week 3 of the One Room Challenge is over!

If you are new here, welcome to the NestFeathers blog! A tiny bit about me: I’m Janet, an interior designer, blogger, cooking enthusiast, and relentless hostess (at least before all this pandemic insanity), and this is my little corner of the world northwest of Boston. In addition to being passionate about helping people harness the power of good design to live more beautifully, productively, and graciously, I am actively banishing fluorescent lights and plastic forks from the planet.

My daughter, AKA the Diva, modeling one of her straw hats. ICYMI her hat collection is one of the inspiration points for the bedroom makeover for the ORC.

The nationwide One Room Challenge is the brilliant brainchild of Linda Weinstein and this is my first time as a guest participant! We are giving my daughter’s bedroom a makeover for our project and you can see the before pictures HERE and read about last weeks progress and our awesome FB marketplace score HERE!

it’s the end of week 3 of the ORC (One Room Challenge, not the Tolkien baddies!) already and that means we should be closing in on halfway done. We are so NOT halfway done! Panic ensues…That is not to say we haven’t made progress, but it’s been a busy week so most of that progress is in the form of things ordered and starting to arrive. No pretty pictures yet….

We got the sisal rug for the floor from RugsUSA, YAY…I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to come! We haven’t even opened it yet since it needs to live in the garage for a bit, so I trust it is the right one! The label is right and the size is right and we’ll check it this weekend to make sure it is what it says it is!.

We also ordered the wheat colored matelassé dust skirt and the matching coverlet which will become an upholstered headboard. We ordered from The Company Store and they are beautiful, but the first package had only the coverlet even though the packing slip SAID it contained both pieces. I called customer service on Sunday afternoon and the rep could not have been nicer! She refunded the amount for the missing bedskirt and then reordered it for me with express overnight shipping at no extra cost! They are having a 20% off sale sitewide right now for Memorial Day Weekend with the code MDWKD20 so it’s an excellent time to buy if you need any new quality bedding!

“proof of life”…our matelasse from The Company Store is here!!

Gorgeous Matelasse from The Company Store comes in so. many. colors!

As I mentioned, the coverlet is destined to be a new custom upholstered headboard. My upholstery workroom is back in business this week, so I think we’ll be able to get this done in time! The best room layout means that the bed will be in front of a window - not usually an ideal situation, but in this room, we don’t really have a choice. If it’s going to overlap a window I’m going to make it work! We’ll center it on the window and make the drapes the width of the bed so they frame the whole thing and make it make sense. The other issue is that the window is not very large and we don’t want to cover too much of it. Most headboards in the style we want are too tall for this location, so Danny, my genius upholsterer to the rescue! Below is a quick sketch on trace over a photo of the room (her current daybed is under the window already), and the adjustments made when I did a measured drawing for the workroom to let them know the shape, the width, the height, and where the mattress will fall so the upholstered part can overlap the mattress.

Now if only the sample of our fabric would show up!! We REALLY need that so we can get the fabric yardage ordered in time to get the drapery panels made!

This week we need to finalize the fabric so we can start painting the vanity, and also sort out the details for how our feature wall is going to work…which necessitates an interesting conversation with a metal fabricator in town…hopefully they are back to work and available! If all goes well, I’ll be learning to use a miter box in a couple of weeks. maybe.

Now since the inspiration for this room was part garden fantasy, I’ll share the pretty pictures of my bounty from the wholesale nursery earlier today! This weekend is for planting my deck pots…Yahoo! This is my favorite (and only) gardening chore - it is so transformative to have a pretty outdoor space in which to spend time! Also, my kids bought me the birdbath from my Mother’s Day Gift Guide for Mother’s Day (I LOVE that they read my blog!), and it is absolutely PERFECT on my deck - can’t wait to get it surrounded by flower pots!
