One Room Challenge Dressing Room Do Over: Construction Underway!

It is Week 6 of the ORC and we are down to the wire with this one, but there is good news!  There is hope that It might actually come together?!  “This one” meaning this Dressing Room Do Over project for the current One Room Challenge (ORC for short).  ICYMI You can read all about the history of the One Room Challenge in Week 1, as well as see all the embarrassing before pictures of the dressing room in question.  If you are just joining us, here is what has been happening:

I am happy to report that the delightful sound of a saw cutting up my plywood into closet sized dimensions started today.  I am doing the *happy dance* here as that means my closet organization is well and truly underway!

My carpenter measured my jewelry trays to double check the sizes since they determine the critical dimension for the bay that will contain the slide out accessory drawers and the pull out scarf rack.  The rest of the bays can be shallower.

Once he gets all the pieces cut, I’ll need to move out of my closet so he can take out the existing rods and supports, such as they are. I am currently on the hunt for a rolling rack or two to borrow so I have somewhere to hang up my stuff while this project wraps up!

I’m packing up anything I don’t currently love to go in the Thredup cleanout kit.  I love Thredup - it is the ultimate in recycling!  It is a second hand clothing reseller and they are very particular about what they sell - from the buying side, they have a great website and good pricing and they are keeping stuff out of the landfill, which I am totally on board with!  And who could resist those teal polka dots??

But back to the cleanout kit…they send a bag, you return it filled, postage free and whatever they accept you will receive a little commission on when it sells.  What they don’t accept or what doesn’t sell gets donated or can be returned to you for a nominal fee, but once I clean stuff out, I don’t ever want to see it again!

I’m impatiently waiting for my wallpaper to arrive for the walls of the closet.  I chose this wallcovering from Brewster Wallcovering from the ones I narrowed it down to last week.  Drumroll please…

Teal Darcy Peel and Stick Wallpaper from Brewster

I know a lot of you voted for the peacocks, but I went for the dramatic contrast of this one.  And also because I thought some of the peacocks might end up beheaded by various intervening shelves, which seemed a little unkind.

It is a peel and stick paper so easy-ish to install (hopefully!).

The other activity of the week is ordering the accessories…another set of jewelry organizers for the second drawer, new hangers, and shelf dividers to create some slots for handbags.

I don’t have anything approaching the hat collection of the diva, so I’ll have plenty of space for the few hats I own.

My current hanger situation is a mishmash.  I did eliminate all the wire dry cleaner hangers early in life.  Those things have a mind of their own and I swear they multiply like rabbits when you aren’t looking.  I have wood, velvet, and plastic at the moment and I want to streamline that to just one type for a cohesive look.

My velvet ones are varying shades of teal because they were purchased from different places at different times - they are skinny hangers which are great for not taking up much space, and the velvet surface has a bit of friction that keeps things from sliding off, but they are pretty susceptible to breaking and the skinny profile sometimes creates pointy folds in the clothes.

My plastic ones are actually pretty sturdy and have swivel tops which is nice, but the matching skirt ones are not as nice, and…they are plastic, which just doesn’t exude grown up elegance no matter how practical.

So, I’ve ordered a fleet of wood hangers to supplement the ones I already own. Wood hangers are a sturdy classic. Their rounded thicker profile is kind to clothes and they can hold heavier garments like coats or gowns (not that I own any gowns at the moment, but a girl can dream!) without buckling under the pressure. And with my improved layout, I have plenty of space for them

I filled up some of my jewelry trays already, and I have another jewelry box to go through, so getting another set made sense.  The inserts in these come out so I can create some different sized compartments if needed too.

And finally, I ordered these clear acrylic shelf dividers to see if they work for my handbags - if they don’t, they can always go back!

My window treatments are supposed to arrive next week, and I’m SO excited!  I’m not changing my drapery hardware quite yet, but I ordered new, simpler finials and rings with eyelets rather than the clips to upgrade the look a bit.

That’s all the news for this week…still a lot of hurry up and wait!  Next week will be crunch time with installations and painting and wallpapering happening!  EEK!  Can’t wait!
