Project in Progress: Beach House Update

Today, we gave “beach day” a whole new twist.  Beach Day for us was a site visit to the modern beach house guest cottage project we are working on.  We started this project back in 2022 reviewing and refining the architect’s plans for the best solutions.

Following that was months of negotiating the kitchen and bath layouts, creating the design plans, lighting plans, millwork and tile details, furniture plans, and curating the interior and exterior finishes, fixtures, and furnishings. You can see some of our modern beach house selections here.

We’ve been on many site visits in the intervening months as the plans started to take shape, and now we are in the home stretch as the finishes are {finally} getting installed!

It is so exciting and gratifying to see the progress since my last visit.

Our visit today was to check on the latest round of installs, finalize the flooring stain finish, meet with the guy measuring for the stair runner, and do some final measurements for the built in seat cushion and the drapery wall in the primary bedroom.

A linear fireplace is set in a wall tiled in a honed black porcelain tile that resembles stone.

I love love LOVE how everything is coming together!  The fabulous black tiled fireplace chimney has been in a while, but it still is a showstopper.  You can see it here through the rack of supplies, the cardboard visible at the bottom is the opening for the linear gas fireplace.

The backsplash tile we originally selected was discontinued by the time it was needed, so we had to reselect and this alternative turned out beautifully.

The mosaic pieces are a bit smaller, and it has some glitzier bits in it, but the colors and overall shape are consistent with the one we built the design around, and they have the feel of the bits of shell and beach glass that wash up on the shore just steps away.

The wallpaper is up…oh be still my heart!

The guest bedroom has a feature wall of wallpaper in an aqua and white which will be paired with bright coral accent pieces.

The guest bath and laundry space has this eye-popping fabulous bold turquoise paper.

And the primary bath is swathed in a sophisticated navy ‘under the sea’ pattern.  The deco strip of iridescent blue tile , the light blue ceiling, and even the adjacent taupe bedroom paint are all colors drawn from the pattern.  The pictures don’t do it justice - it couldn’t be more perfect!

And the blue tongue and groove vaulted ceiling in the loft should be done this week!  This sunny space has access to a roof deck and spectacular views on all 4 sides of the ocean and the marsh.

We are still waiting on some stray trim pieces from the cabinet company, but the rest of the painting, floor staining, remaining loft trim, and railing installation will happen in the coming weeks.  I’ll be really happy to see that railing go in so its not quite so precarious a climb to the loft!

But totally worth the risk! The roof deck off the loft wraps around 3 sides and boasts glimpses of ocean sunrises and marshside sunsets.

We still have some installations to go (furniture/lighting/window treatments) and the whole accessory and styling phase, but we are hoping to be able to photograph this project by summer…stay tuned!
