New Year, Fresh Start

January is a time of change - new year, new resolutions, a perfect time for a fresh start.

The holiday decorations are all packed up and put away, but before you mindlessly arrange your stuff the way it was before you shifted it to accommodate the season, think about ways to give your home a fresh start as well.  Rethink furniture placement.  Eliminate clutter.  Organize your space so it works efficiently for you and it is comfortable and a pleasure to live in.  Easier said than done? Totally!

Here is a new year's resolution challenge for you - don't keep something  just because...use this opportunity to challenge the status quo.  William Morris said, "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.".   This famous quote is a great measuring stick to use to determine what stays and what goes.  Don't waste your money trying to buy things to go with a piece of furniture, paint color, or floor covering that you hate in the hope that they will somehow help you hate it less.  Buy what gives you joy.

We had a client who called us in to rescue her master bedroom suite  - she liked some things about it (much of her furniture, her custom bedding and window treatments, her collection of jadeware and artwork), hated others (the oppressiveness of the wall color, the rug, the uncomfortable loveseat).

We recommended some pillows and a rug in patterns that would pull together the golds and burgundies in her bedding and valances with the jade in her accessories, a lighter, but still warm, paint color, a pair of comfortable chairs and ottoman for a useable lounging spot by the fireplace, and simple re-arrangement of artwork and accessories.  She was excited by our suggestions and delighted with the outcome!

Tis the Season ... to Deck the Halls!

As promised...here are a few shots from the house we switched from fall to Christmas decor the week after Thanksgiving.  It was too dark by the time we finished to take photo's of the outside, but perhaps we'll get back to shoot those later!  Above and below are shots of the family room mantel all decked out in traditional red and green and gold for Christmas!

And here is one of the pair of matching wreaths being finished up and ready to hang in the arched tops of the family room windows.

Because the dining room is a dramatic eggplant color with white trim and wainscoting, we opted for a wintery wonderland feel with greenery accented with silver and white.  Mercury glass candlesticks from fall hold new silver candles and mix with a series of mercury glass and metal trees.  The wreath over the mirror is a revamped faux wreath with new flocked boxwood and white snowflakes, white glittery berry/leaf sprigs and mercury glass pinecones all topped with an elegant silver and white lavish bow.

Even the chandelier got in on the action with a faux evergreen and pine cone garland and sprigs of flocked boxwood - all artificial so no stray pine needles wind up in the food!

The kitchen got a silver and gold makeover - filling a trio of glass jars from the homeowners collection with silver and gold ornaments and jingle bells, and flanking the assortment with her gold angel candleholders.   And even the kitchen chandelier got a faux evergreen garland wound with silver and gold ribbon and with a jingle bell accenting the center finial.  The kitchen hall sideboard was arranged with antique shutters to corral Christmas cards, and a be-ribbonned rustic tree, alongside some family heirloom wooden decorative pieces.

Even the powder room received festive treatment arranging the homeowners Christmas towels, gingerbread ceramics, and metallic trees along with some new monogrammed Christmas guest towels.

A stair garland topped with ribbons and berries and finished with a lush bow greets guests in the main foyer, along with an entry table displaying a collection of caroler Christmas figures.

The outside received swags of mixed greens, pine cones, and ribbons for the garage and lamppost, a noble fir wreath with mixed greens and berries with a large bow for the door, and mixed green garlands with berries and ribbons adorning the railing for a welcoming entry to visitors throughout the season!

And the faux greens will be perfect for those spots where it is too hot or sunny or over the dining area where you don't want pine needles and berries dropping into your dinner!

World Market has made it to the Northeast!

A sort of Anthropologie meets IKEA with a little Pier One and Crate and Barrel thrown in ... along with some Williams Sonoma gourmet food and a remarkable assortment of beer and wine ... there is something here for just about everyone!  The store is brand new so there are stretches of empty shelves still waiting to be filled with product, but so far, it has an impressive variety of well designed stuff at reasonable and often bargain prices. Let me take you on an iphone tour of the store as seen last weekend ...

Happy Fall!

Crisp fall days ... perfect weather, sunny skies, fall colors starting to appear in the landscape and the scent of apple cider ... all cause to revel in this beautiful, quintessentially New England season!

Adding fall touches throughout the house seems an ideal way to celebrate.

Fabric Love

It is no secret that I LOVE textured fabrics, and that I am especially fond of embroidered fabrics. The lush textures of embroidered patterns on silk or linen or cotton immediately convey either refined or relaxed elegance depending on the fabric, fiber content and pattern.  So without further ado, here are a few current favorites!

Sunny Brookline Condo Project Part 2: Office and Bedroom

Okay, back to our Brookline condo and one of our favorite clients!  We are still working on some rooms on the first floor and we don't have those pictures yet, but meanwhile - let's head upstairs to a couple of really great spaces that show how custom built-ins can sometimes be the ideal solution.

DSC_0043
DSC_0043

First, the office.  Givens:  a great room, lot's of sunlight, high ceilings, a working fireplace, stunning millwork, and a curved wall.  All in all great assets but the curved wall and fireplace presented some challenges for fitting furniture into the room for the list of activities the clients wanted to accommodate here.  They wanted 2 desk spaces, plenty of office supply storage and file space, comfy seating for the fireplace and space for books, a fairly large television, and media equipment.  Custom built-ins to the rescue!

A double door opposite the fireplace that had been walled off in the adjacent room, became the perfect size already-framed niche for a custom console cabinet and shelves to house the television, media equipment, and bookshelves.

The curved wall was built in under the windows with a stone countertop and white cabinetry that matched the existing wainscot paneling to create two generous desk spaces with ample drawers and cabinets for file and office supply storage.

Chairs, a table and a fluffy rug complete the seating area by the fireplace that has a perfect view for reading, relaxing, or watching TV.

Next up, the master bedroom.  Possibly the most challenging room in the house, the room has few perpendicular walls and an array of assorted doors, closets, windows and alcoves.  The client requested bookshelf space so they could unpack some of the boxes of books they have amassed, and the ability to make the room completely dark for those occasions when she needs to sleep during daylight hours.   The only piece of furniture that she wanted to reuse was a lovely sleigh bed. Below is the design concept:

Again, the built-in solution was the best way to accomplish all of the desired outcomes. Building around a door and the headboard allowed for a wall of bookcases with integrated lighting and nightstand space.  Painting the built-in, the door on that wall,  and all the remaining walls a striking marine blue contributes a cozy, dark, library feel to the room.

We also made sure the dark color was not oppressive by specifying a gloss paint for a lacquer-like finish that reflects light.  Blackout Hunter Douglas shades at the windows offer complete light control as well as provide insulation value.

The resulting space functions perfectly AND beautifully!
