One of our clients recently purchased a lovely home. Built in 1898, this period home was originally a rectory for the church on the property. The church was converted into luxury condos (you can see one of those spectacular spaces HERE) and the rectory was divided into 2 generous units retaining many of the original features from leaded glass windows and pocket doors to some of the beautiful original millwork.
We’ve been working with the new owner to celebrate and highlight these features and make it uniquely theirs with new paint and wallpaper, and collected furnishings and artwork.
Less spectacular, was, predictably, the powder room. Choices had been made…and none of them were what I would call delightful.
A generic and underwhelming space off the gracious entry, our client sought to inject it with the charm that is so obvious in the rest of the house.
Project Goals and Existing Conditions
Powder Room Design Solutions
Add millwork and wallcovering
Replace flooring with more appropriate mosaic tile
Replace vanity with pedestal sink with curved profile
Use a vintage mirror flanked by sconces
Potentially add a leaded glass ceiling pendant
I offered several William Morris style wallpaper options, but one bubbled to the top as our favorite in the space.
The millwork will be painted a green from the wallpaper, and a mosaic tile with a sage green dot will cover the floor.
We haven’t decided on the ceiling treatment, but something that echoes the yellow in the wall covering like a soft golden metallic might be a fun addition.
Wainscoting could be beadboard or paneled, but would cover the lower portion of the wall with wallpaper above.
Our client found a vintage leaded glass pendant and is on the hunt for a pair of vintage sconces. The Victorian mirror she already owns is the perfect size.
Faucet and light fixtures will be in a vintage brass/gold finish.
And I’ve found the only pedestal sink on the planet that is both the right size and right profile to work in the space…stock seems to be low so hopefully we can actually get it! Fingers crossed…
This is going to be a perfect little jewel box of a powder room when it’s done - I can’t wait to share it!
