Some holidays deserve to be celebrated and some are merely excuses for a party or indulgence or are patently ridiculous.
While you have probably heard of pi day (March 14th aka 3 14) in honor of the pi mathematical symbol rounded most commonly to 3.14, casual pi day is the 22 of July, for the fraction approximation as 22/7…which only really works in the way the rest of the world writes dates, not so much the way we do in America.
BUT any excuse to indulge in pie is a worthy celebration, and I am a European city girl at heart with my love of beautiful old architecture, sidewalk cafe dining, and the charm of cobblestone streets, so I’ll write the date backwards (for me) and declare it a cause for celebrating.
Pi, the mathematical constant used in geometry to describe the size of a circle, seemed to someone appropriate to attach to pie, which has the same pronunciation and a circular shape, and so it has become so at least amongst nerds who remember their 10th grade geometry…
Anyway, at this time of year, my favorite fruit pie would be peach or blueberry (or maybe mixed together?!) since those are in season here. OR a refreshing key lime pie is always an appropriate treat in warmer weather.
If you are making a pie with a pasty crust, our favorite easy and deliciously flaky and buttery crust recipe can be found here. It makes a double crust, is made in a food processor, and rolls out like play-doh with no cracking and crumbling. If you don’t need both crusts right away, freeze one for later!
We have used several excuses to host pie parties - I mean who doesn’t like pie?? The most recent iteration was on Pi Day this past March 14th (Pi Day Party pictures and recipes HERE).
Or we’ve had several fall pie parties to celebrate the flavors of the season (see our favorite apple pie recipe HERE!)
For this fall pie party, we used traditional fall colors for decor.
And for our most recent autumn celebration we decorated with silver and white pumpkins and green and white flowers for an unexpected and elegant twist.
As most of you already know, I love hosting dessert parties, and pie parties are certainly an easy theme that is sure to please!
So,
Happy Casual Pi Day!
What is your favorite flavor of pie?
