We are working on a Primary Bedroom makeover right now for a returning client and I’m loving what we are putting together.
The color palette is based on the clients favorite hues (and mine!) of blues and greens. And our designs are planned to work with her favorite duvet cover which has those colors along with most of her current major furniture pieces.
It is not necessary to start from scratch if you already have quality pieces you like that will work in the plan.
We are creating a pretty, relaxing, and functional retreat in this master bedroom space.
Existing Conditions
The space is a large and light attic space. It contains a vaulted ceiling that follows the roofline and angles to shorter than standard height walls on either side; ~6 1/2’ on the front wall and ~4 1/2’’ on the rear wall. It contains multiple windows including a skylight, an arch topped double window in the gable end, and a pair of single windows on the front wall.
The pieces we will definitely be reusing are a queen size cherry sleigh bed, an antique dresser, a small standing jewelry chest, and a cherry writing table/desk with a computer that the Mr. uses and the Mrs would like to be neater :).
There are also assorted tables, a storage ottoman/bench, a white cheval mirror, some random bookcase pieces scattered around and some seating pieces that have seen better days.
A central ceiling fan with the dreaded attached light fixture will be replaced with a plain, quiet ceiling fan. Lamplight, much friendlier than overhead light, will provide illumination with table and floor lamps serving the various zones.
The worn carpet will be replaced with new neutral cut pile pet friendly carpeting.
Design Goals
Our first order of business was to create a layout that provided:
The bed on the preferred front wall
Space for the desk and storage for desk-related items
Display and storage space for sentimental items like photo albums, pictures and collections, and potentially a small television
A seating area near a sunny window for relaxing and enjoying a beverage
Next we addressed solutions for the windows. The skylight has a blind, but a light control solution is needed for the double and single windows. A combination of wood blinds, classic drapery panels, and London valances will add softness, function, and proportion to the windows.
Design Solutions
New painted pieces including a pair of nightstands and a long storage/bookcase piece sized to just fit the wall height will add color to the mix of predominantly stained wood furniture.
New upholstery including a pair of club chairs and round tufted ottoman in front of the window provide seating. The bench currently at the foot of the bed is neutral and could possibly stay, but ideally a prettier upholstered bench or pair of upholstered stools could replace it.
The desk was relocated to a less prominent location on the entry wall and includes space for a storage chest with a file drawer.
Textiles include embroidered florals for window treatments and pillows and nubbly textures for upholstery pieces.
Walls painted a soft blue-green and neutral taupe carpet will complete the serene, pretty space.
I can’t wait to see it all come together!
