A powder bath is a great makeover project because it is typically a small space and therefore you can splurge a little without breaking the bank.
As bathroom makeovers go, a powder room has fewer elements to consider; only one sink, and no bathing facilities and therefore no steam or humidity to worry about.
It is also a space where you can afford to be a little more bold and inject some drama and character while still keeping in mind the color flow and style of the surrounding public spaces.
A little “wow factor” is a nice surprise for guests who use the space. A powder bath makeover offers an opportunity for whimsy or elegance or whatever suits your personality.
I’m currently working on a plan for a future powder bath makeover for an out of state project.
The bath is off the kitchen on the main floor of a sprawling cape style house. The kitchen was recently renovated in a very classic black and white with warm neutral walls and a brick fireplace. The other public rooms feature various shades of reds and golds and green accents.
The current state of the powder room is pretty much what was there when the owners purchased the house 20+ years ago and it is overdue to catch up to the rest of the rooms.
Moving plumbing is more expense than necessary so the toilet will stay slightly off-center and be reused.
The wainscoting and built in mirror cabinet are charming so I would recommend keeping those.
The size and configuration of the room requires a petite sink. The current pedestal one is fine, but a little more modern in style than would be ideal. I’d love to replace it with a charming console sink if possible, but changing out the faucet to a more traditional option would help if not.

The lighting would ideally be changed to a pair of small candle sconces flanking the mirror, or they may just replace the current fixture with an upgraded one.
Powder Bath mini-makeover options
The most impactful changes would be to the surfaces.
Painting all the wainscoting and trim a gloss black and wallpapering the upper walls with either a white background paper with black and an assortment of colors OR a black background paper for a moodier vibe would be transformative.

I would also recommend painting the ceiling in a blue color that references one of the wallpaper colors.
The aging floor tile needs to be replaced and I recommend a black and white hex mosaic tile. This ties in nicely with the adjacent kitchen.
A coordinating striped valance for the window will be designed once the wallpaper is selected.
Accessories depend on other choices. If the console sink is used, the cross bar would serve as a towel rail. If a pedestal sink is used, we would need a towel bar or ring.
Other necessities would include a matching TP holder, and a waste basket of course.
This has great potential and I look forward to seeing it transformed!
